Over the past year, I’ve become someone who dislikes words, a bit ironic as words are what this blog is made of. As far as we’re convinced, no other species on this planet is sophisticated enough to use words — yet another example for why we’re the most advanced, right?

Unpopular opinion: No.

We are the only species dependent on the abstraction of words to “communicate” — no other animal on this planet shares this dependency. Why not?

Part of what we mean by “communicate” is to mislead, deceive, demean and wound simply for the purpose of pleasure. Other animals practice tactical deception primarily when it’s life-threatening. Not humans though — evidently, the most advanced do it simply because we can.
